Readers’ Favorite is a service I hadn’t heard of until my marketing consultant at Reedsy recommended it. It provides customer reviews and holds an annual international contest. The support is friendly, and the explanations of how it works comprehensive.

They publish detailed review pages on tens of thousands of books in 150+ genres. They write that they “only list premium books (4 and 5 stars), reviews and reader comments are primarily positive, which creates an enjoyable community for book enthusiasts.”

In these fractious times, we need positive, enjoyable spaces to escape and recharge. So I submitted The Soul’s Awakening for their service that provides 5 reviews. I received my first one today.

But first, why contract with customer review services, and are they objective? People don’t buy books without at least 20 customer reviews. Editorial reviews from well-regarded entities like Self-Publishing Review and Midwest Book Review provide credibility. But readers clicking, clicking, clicking through book pages, spending only seconds at a time on each, look for reviews and ratings. How many? How many stars? It’s the social biology at play, isn’t it! Other people like it, so I’ll like it, goes the mental process. Oh, few seem to have read it, so maybe…click, onto the next book.

As an indie author, it’s difficult to get people to review one’s book. And frankly, after having published many books, it’s wearying to keep asking. You already feel like you’re asking the impossible; to do it ever year is just something I cannot do anymore, especially as my brain injury and its consequences have diminished my network to negligible. So here we are.

And, yes, they’re objective. I have zero say in what they write. And I don’t want to have a say. I want to know what readers really think.

Review by Doreen Chombu for Readers’ Favorite

The Soul’s Awakening offers a compelling exploration of life’s most profound questions, encouraging readers to reflect on their own choices and the paths they take.” — Doreen Chombu

The Soul’s Awakening by Shireen Anne Jeejeebhoy is a thought-provoking story that follows Charlotte Elisabeth, a woman in her sixties who has decided to end her life through euthanasia due to a cardiac condition. She visits Dr. Veritas at the hospital’s Dying with Dignity Suite for the procedure. However, the rest she was promised does not come. Instead, she finds herself trapped between life and death in a surreal landscape filled with her regrets, fears, and desires. Throughout this journey, she encounters various intriguing beings, including her soul family, a force of darkness, ignorance, and seven forms of wrath. Although confused by the strange occurrences, Charlotte soon learns about Jesus and God. A dive into her past helps her realize how lonely she has been, the lies she was told about her family, and how materialistic she had become. After learning from her mistakes, will Charlotte get a second chance at life, or is it too late for her?

The Soul’s Awakening is the first book in The Q’Zam’Ta Trilogy by Shireen Anne Jeejeebhoy, inviting readers on a profound journey of self-discovery and existential reflection. The story is richly themed, covering the consequences of our choices, the decline of societal values, the true meaning of faith, and how pain can leave us isolated and misguided. It challenges readers to contemplate their lives, relationships, and beliefs through Charlotte’s journey. The relatable scenarios involving family dynamics and personal struggles, combined with a rich blend of fantasy, metaphysical, and spiritual elements, make the narrative engaging and captivating. The author addresses sensitive issues such as medically assisted death, autonomy, spiritual connection, and redemption after death from a fresh perspective. Overall, The Soul’s Awakening offers a compelling exploration of life’s most profound questions, encouraging readers to reflect on their own choices and the paths they take.
