Comment on The Unconscious Mind in an Injured Brain by Shireen http://jeejeebhoy.ca/2014/01/24/the-unconscious-mind-in-an-injured-brain/comment-page-1/#comment-2609 Sun, 02 Feb 2014 03:15:00 +0000 http://jeejeebhoy.ca/?p=3405#comment-2609 Mark Koning shared with me via email and gave permission to post:

I have to start by saying that I liked your grocery shopping example in your blog post. I am somewhat similar because if I deviate from the list I make I can end up standing there looking at the apples or chips, trying to make a decision, for longer than I should. :)

I watched the video of the TVO program and I gave it some thought. I sort of agree with the non-(or sub) conscious mind (I think of ‘unconscious’ as being out of it, knocked out or in a coma) being something that stores automatic information. The example they used of the person driving home and not entirely paying attention makes sense in a way. When something is part of your regular routine and you have preformed it so often I can see it becoming almost like auto-pilot. But I don’t understand how it makes decisions for us and kind of takes away our awareness.
I am quite aware of the things I do; cleaning the house, shopping, moving, talking, etc…. Perhaps it is because of the brain injury that has made me more aware. It also seems to me that the non-conscious being in control of so much thought and decision making, being out of our conscious control, is a bit of a contradiction to neuroplasticity.

The thing I don’t like about “experts” (and they are not all like this) is that when they talk about something that is so individually personal to people (like our habits and the way we function) they talk as if things are set, as if there is only one way. We are all different in many respects to our thoughts.

I just sent in something I wrote for the BIST blog (not published yet) called “Abilities” and one of the things I talk about are the abilities I’ve acquired from my brain injury. I say that I am more focused, more aware, of the things most people take for granted.

After I started meeting people with brain injury, I’d have that similar feeling of having experienced what they were talking about. I found it validating! I’m glad I could do that for you. :) I try and post regularly — that’s my goal although brain injury fatigue etc. gets in the way at times. Thank you for putting my blog in your favourites list!

Years ago, I was struck in the head by a smallish hydraulic arm, from a crane. Fortunately, I was wearing a hard hat . . . at least I was . . . until the impact sent the lid flying ten feet in the air, by all accounts. The cold sensation on my forehead and temples really strikes home. The inability to concentrate for years afterward also rings true. Although I never took the time to get diagnosed or tell my family about the accident, I always wondered if my personality issues and problems with teachers was why I struggled so much in high school. Wow, never in a million years would I have thought I’d run into some of the memories your blog shook out of me. Hey, I hope you continue to add to this blog, its in my favourites-list now.

Im now on growth hormone, thyroid med, estrogen, progesterone, metformin and byetta( type 2) , which before my accident i was working full time raising 3 small children by myself and leading a happy life…..im now on so much medication it takes up most of my days, im also on anti depressants, mood stabalizers for bi polar mood swings? None of these problems before….. I have gone crazy in the last 3 years trying to get better and im no further now than 3 years ago….every dr i talk with looks at me like im crazy and reading this, omg it sounds so much like me , i can not exercise much because it wipes me out for days….some days i feel like walking and it puts me in bed for days and the crying and fustration that comes with all this is the worst, not only for me but also for my family. To top it off my accident attorney told me he couldnt link this to my accident even though i was complaining of sympthoms since day 1….whip lash, partial tear rotator cuff , impigement of shoulder. Hit from behiind and hit vechicle in front of me…..not only did i mistake trusting the first 3 drs i seen, i let my attorney brush this off as well…so im paying for all these meds myself and im not even sure i need them…im going to ask the one dr i trust now to help me look into this…thank you for such a great article….

Comment on CBC’s Marketplace Posits A Theory About COLD-FX by Roy H. http://jeejeebhoy.ca/2012/01/14/marketplace-posits-a-theory-about-cold-fx/comment-page-1/#comment-2581 Mon, 11 Nov 2013 18:52:00 +0000 http://jeejeebhoy.ca/?p=2222#comment-2581 You have to laugh at people who think this stuff works. CBC is was right..and a many other RESPECTED SCIENTISTS (more later) think its not that great either. The product itself..is not unlike corn sugar. It is poly-furanosyl-pyranosyl-sacchardies (this is sugars) that has been extracted by using a aqueous method (soaked in water). Your comment about it being standardized is also a joke sir. This is marketing too. OF COURSE IT IS! It has to be. You can not make a product that has no standardization.

Your reference to Healthcare Canada is also a joke. Cold FX tried to pull the wool over our eyes for years. They sell sold packages intended to be take :”at the first sign” of colds or flus. The dosage was 3 pills 2 times a day for one day, then 2 pills twice a day..then one….it total, about $12 worth. Funny thing they were never allowed to prescribe such dosages..yet they did..to make money. When they were told by Heath Canada to stop..it took 3 years for them to actually stop. Very ‘trustworthy” eh? So reading the label fully..is clearly a stupid place to gain your information.

Siereen, i DO have an idea how research works and I CAN tell you that the data they provide is misleading. Their studies are way small, have a poor P factor and are statistically insignificant. The site relative, not absolute differences in order to mislead.

On a broader scale..what a great marketing position eh? Here is the joke of it all!!!! Follow me on this:

You take a pill every day to, supposedly avoid getting something you don’t have. What you are avoiding, your body will fight off most of the time anyway. Hey, we all have felt a cold coming on..the tickle ion the throat…a couple sneezes…and our body’s acquired and innate immune systems fights it off. The people that take it say “Look how well it works”…when it was their own body doing what it does…protecting you.

Then when they DO get a cold, these people say..well..no one pill is 100% effective. Sound familiar…Shireen?

The CSO and founder of Cold FC is at it again with a new product and the marketing is exactly the same. This is where we laugh a little more. Jackie Chan cold FX company was called Afexa Life Sciences…Her new one… Afinix Life Sciences. Sound familiar?

Her old standardization process was called ChemBioPrint…LOL. THis time its called…Afinity Technology and the wording surrounding it is also the same. THis time, she is selling Omegas. At least the product has a sound scientific backing…but nothing revolutionary.

Before I sign off, I wanted to let you know about one last study that was done..the largest to date…partially sponsored by U.S. National Cancer Institute. This IS a credible body. In laymen’s terms, the NCI wanted to see if Cold FX could stop colds from occurring in their cancer ( chronic lymphocytic leukemia) , as a colds can and do kill them!! If Cold FX worked…. would SAVE LIVES!!!!

No shocker here…..It didn’t. The trail concluded “Conclusion: CVT-E002 (Cold FX’s clinical name) was well tolerated. It did not reduce the number of ARI days or antibiotic use…”

Feel free to take it Shireen. it won’t hurt you and if you think it helps you…then by all means…dig in.

Acid free–archival safe is smart. I usually say, “that’s the normal way T-O-M, right?” instead of asking Tom to spell his name when double checking both the spelling and that I heard the name correctly since he might say, “actually my name is Todd.”

That’s why ABI or acquired brain injury is starting to get more used because it covers a broad spectrum of causes of brain damage that aren’t genetic or congenital. You have an ABI, or brain injury acquired after an infection. The trauma you felt is secondary to the brain injury and is something many feel or have. So you’re not alone that way. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acquired_brain_injury

Herpes Simplex Encephalitis was the original diagnosis. I was hospitalized twice for the same thing. When they released me from the hospital, I suffered a relapse, and was readmitted.
Can you tell me whether or not this is a TBI? It was certainly traumatic for me.
